The Sport

Karate is a form of self-defense and martial art originated from China and was further developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom in what now known as Okinawa prior to its 19th century annexation by Japan. It was brought to the Japan mainland in the early 20th century during a time of cultural exchanges between the Japanese and the Ryukyuans. It later spread to the whole of Japan and subsequently refined throughout the world.

Karate training requires the use of almost every muscle in the body and Karate techniques employs every imaginable part of the body as weapons. A Karate master is able to ‘finish’ an opponent with a single vital point strike and able to apply locks, chokes, sweeps, throws and breakage effortlessly.

Today, there are more than 10 million Karate practitioners world wide benefiting from it. Karate training has a high potential to change a person physically, psychologically and emotionally in a very positive way. The physical training in Karate improve one’s agility, flexibility, strength and co-ordination. The mental training enhances self-discipline, self-esteem, humility, respect for others and loyalty.

WHAT YOU NEED?

Perhaps it is due to the inexpensiveness to pick up this sports that has seen Karate becoming one of the most populated sports being practiced in the world today. Karate training only requires a well-ventilated room or open space with smooth wooden flooring (Karate-ka train without their shoes on). Student need only to pay for their set of uniforms (Do-Gi) and subscription fees and they can start their training to benefit from it.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN YOU DECIDED TO TAKE UP KARATE?

Look for Registered NROC Coaches and Karate Clubs which are recognized as an affiliate of SINGAPORE KARATE-DO FEDERATION (SKF). SKF is the only recognised and controlling body of all Karate affairs and matter in the Republic of Singapore. It is affiliated to the world body (World Karate-Do Federation), Asian continental body (Asia Karate-Do Federation) and Singapore National Olympic Council and sanctioned by Singapore Sports Council. It is your only assurance to quality and recognition.
